Description

The Macallan 1968 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt is an incredibly rare and highly sought-after vintage Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky, distilled in 1968 and bottled in 1994. Matured for 25 years in selected sherry oak casks from Jerez in Spain, this expression is part of the legendary Macallan Anniversary Malt special bottling series. It is known for its rich, heavily sherried style, offering a complex interplay of sherry, malt, and wood spice, bottled without the addition of colorants and chill-filtration. This release comes in its original wooden presentation box and is considered a significant collector's item, representing a piece of Macallan's history before its modern rebrand.

Nose
Nicely sherried with notes of plums, dried apricots, toffee, and a slightly dusty smokiness. Hints of peppermint, molasses, chocolate-covered raisins, balsamic vinegar, Christmas cake, cinnamon rolls, stewed fruits, baking spice, leather, candied pecans, maple syrup, tobacco, vanilla, almonds, cherry, chocolatey sweetness, oranges, a gentle saltiness, toasted hazelnuts, and delicate wood-smoke.
Palate
Very silky, rich, and decadent, with chocolate and oranges. Still some hints of smoke, more balsamic vinegar, becoming quite winey and tannic. Flavors include cognac, baking spice, maraschino cherry syrup, oak, toffee, cinnamon raisin oatmeal, Seville oranges, tar, cigar tobacco, stewed apples, cinnamon sticks, mulled wine, toasted vanilla, gingerbread, dates, and spicy European oak. The mouthfeel is smooth and voluptuous, though sometimes described as a touch thin.
Finish
Rather short, not very expressive, and slightly dry in some instances, but also described as warming with lingering spice, dried fruit, toffee, and tobacco notes. Can be almost astringent but somehow sweet, with a slight hint of sulphur. Medium length with mulling spices, black tea, nutmeg, and sherry sweetness.
