Description

This is a single malt Japanese whisky from the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima, Japan. It was distilled in 2016 and 2017 and bottled in 2020, making it 3-4 years old. Matured primarily in ex-Bourbon and some ex-Sherry casks, this peated expression is non-chill filtered and bottled at 50% ABV. It is the second single malt release from the Tsunuki Distillery.

Maltiply Tasting Profile

Nose: Smoked maple syrup, wet campfire, dried apricot, hints of fruit and honey, pears, apples, and plum with sweet Bourbon cask notes.
Palate: Prominent peat, sandalwood, browned butter, stemmy herbs, wet gravel, and a hint of menthol. Also smoky chocolate sauce, smoky BBQ chili glaze, hot embers, salty notes, honey, creamy vanilla, and a fruity, sweet, and soft flavor.
Finish: Drying with lingering notes of black fruit and charred oak. Medium long, still quite peaty but sweeter, with hard candy, rich fruit flavors, strawberries, vanilla ice cream, grilled pineapple covered in sticky BBQ glaze, and hints of yellow fruits.

Smoke is plainly central here, with wet campfire on the nose and prominent peat on the palate. The sweeter details matter too: smoked maple syrup and fruit lead into smoky chocolate, then a drying finish with black fruit and charred oak. That contrast gives the peat more to work with than smoke alone. For someone who enjoys peat, this looks like a characterful option, though the smoke is clearly a defining feature.
