Description

Mars The Y.A. #02 is the second release in the Yakushima Aging series from Hombo Shuzo, a Japanese blended malt whisky. It combines malt whiskies distilled at Mars Shinshu and Mars Tsunuki distilleries, which are then matured in the unique, humid subtropical climate of the Mars Yakushima Aging Cellar on Yakushima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This limited edition release was bottled in 2023 at 49% ABV and is non-chill filtered. It is peated to an average of 15ppm and aged for a minimum of 3 years, primarily in bourbon and sherry barrels. The unique aging process in Yakushima is known to intensify cask interaction and impart distinctive salty and tropical fruit notes.

Nose
Generous citrus and tropical fruit aromas, including banana chips, coconut, custard, grilled peach, orange, grapefruit, lime, mango, guava, and papaya juice, with a hint of sea spray and gentle white smoke. Vanilla and orchard fruits also emerge.
Palate
Rich and unctuous, with creamy white chocolate, vanilla wafer, caramelized pineapple, banana, apple peels, dried citrus, red grape, and peppercorn. A thick flavor develops with smoky and mineral notes, toasted oak, and sweet wood smoke.
Finish
A rich, oily taste that lingers long, with notes of pepper, dark chocolate, and smokey oolong tea. It is smooth, balanced, and offers remarkable persistence.
