Description

Michter's US*1 Sour Mash Whiskey is a small batch American whiskey, revived in 2012, known for its unique grain selection that prevents it from being categorized as either a bourbon or a rye. It is matured in fire-charred, new American white oak barrels and is filtered before bottling. This expression was named 'Whisky Of The Year' for 2019 by The Whisky Exchange.

The notes give a clear sense of the contrast here: sweet caramel and corn move into rye spice, with vanilla carrying through to the finish. I like that the character is described distinctly, though the hotter peppery finish and dryness make it less purely gentle.

This has a friendly sweet-to-spiced progression: burnt sugar, vanilla and candied fruit on the nose lead into caramel and corn before the rye spice comes forward. I like that it doesn’t stay in one lane. The finish sounds more peppery and a little dry, which keeps the sweetness from feeling too soft, though it may be a sharper close than some will want. A balanced, approachable take on this American whiskey style.

the sweet caramel and peppery finish sound appealing; SGD 101.84 gives pause.
