Description

The Mortlach 16 Year Old Distiller's Dram is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region, known as 'the Beast of Dufftown' for its robust character. It is part of Mortlach's core range, introduced in 2018, and is inspired by the original 16-year-old bottling from 1992. This expression undergoes Mortlach's unique 2.81 times distillation process, which contributes to its complex and meaty new make spirit. Matured for 16 years in a combination of first-fill and refill European oak sherry casks, it offers a rich and sherried profile with notes of dried fruits, spices, and a distinctive savory quality. Nose
Rich and deep, with singed raisins, oozing apple pies, dark fruitcake, stewed black and orchard fruits (damson, black cherry), earthy notes, spice, damp-oak rancio, fresh-oak cinnamon, dates, chocolate, and a touch of Dundee cake.
Palate
Robust, full-bodied, and palate-coating. Sweet and savoury with brown sugar syrup, dried raisins and apples, gentle barrel char, sharp orchard fruit (unripe apples, crunchy pears), dark oloroso notes, dark chocolate sauce, hints of menthol and clove, hard caramel, dark dried fruit (sultanas, figs), tropical notes (canned peaches), crème brûlée, baked apple, toffee, leathery spice, apricot, honey, vanilla, marcona almond, and a hint of bright lemon zest.
Finish
Long, complex, and surprisingly sweetening, with mint and menthol fading to chocolate raisins. Intense with initial sweetness becoming more dry and spicy. Burnt sugar, bitter notes, coffee, smoke, leaves, almonds, and a slight woodiness.
