Description

There are few words that can do justice to the oldest whisky ever released, but we'll give it a go. This peerless single malt from Mortlach was distilled all the way back in 1939 - the year World War Two erupted - and distilled in a single first fill sherry butt for 75 years before emerging in 2015. If you do manage to get your hands on one of just 100 bottles to be released you'll be stunned at h ... This Mortlach 75 Year Old is presented in a teardrop-shaped decanter, handcrafted with 75 'cuts' representing each year of maturation, and comes with a white presentation plinth, two specially designed crystal glasses, a luxury Aniline leather travel bag, and a commissioned book.

Nose
A mellow, waxy, and fruity aroma with notes of candlewax, Maraschino cherries in Madeira cake, orangey citric notes, apricot jam, flaked almonds, and light coconut oil. It is fresh, clean, highly perfumed, floral, with hints of soft leather, dried figs, pomegranate, ripe pear, peach juice, creamy vanilla, vanilla fudge, and a faint trace of coffee. Also noted are mirabelle pie, cinnamon, almond powder, wild herbs, saponin, palm oil, shea butter, fresh hazelnuts, green oranges, a faint metallic touch, and menthol.
Palate
Surprisingly lively, with a smooth, waxy mouthfeel. It starts sweet but becomes moderately dry, revealing dried fig, tobacco notes, and a light smokiness. Flavors include bitter citrus, spice, honey, dried peaches, honey candy, and a hint of nutmeg. It is balanced, soft, medium-bodied, with toffee, toasted cereals, dusty and sooty smoke, coal tar soap, subtle fig notes, and a great depth of tannins.
Finish
Rich treacle toffee and malt with an aromatic backdrop of spices. It has a medium-length, warming, and subtle finish, leaving an attractive aftertaste of sandalwood, pronounced dried peach and nectarine, citrus bitter, sweet spice, and a beautiful uniform dryness across the mouth.
