Description

Mortlach Midnight Malt 30 Year Old Annual 2023 Release is a heavyweight Speyside single malt whisky from the Mortlach distillery, known for its complex 2.81 times distillation process. This 30-year-old expression, part of the Diageo Rare & Exceptional and Special Releases 2023 series, is aged initially in refill American and European oak casks, then finished in Bordeaux wine, Calvados, and Guatemalan rum casks, and finally married in custom quarter casks. It is a limited edition with only 3500 bottles produced, capturing an unexpected richness and intensity.

Nose
A mellow nose with some initial prickle, settling into savoury and faintly herbal notes, suggesting pork crackling sprinkled with dry sage. Deeper vinous notes with dark rum, toffee brittle, and traces of chocolate.
Palate
A richly winey, apple fruity, and mouth-watering start, backed by a long spicy intensity with a delicious black pepper note that persists. Dark chocolate, tropical fruit, candied ginger, umami, and savoury notes.
Finish
Long, sweet, and deep-flavoured with a light peppery spiciness. With water, softer, with spicy heat joined by a suggestion of mint chocolate in the lingering aftertaste. Wood-infused sweetness, rum-driven molasses.
