A bottle of Mortlach 20 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled in 1978 and bottled in May 1998 at a natural cask strength of 62.2% ABV. This release is part of Diageo's now discontinued Rare Malts Selection range, a series of limited-edition, cask strength whiskies first released in 1995. Extremely punchy with wood smoke, grassy notes, vanilla custard, orange cake, paraffin, kirsch or stone fruit, fresh almonds, pan-seared beef, hay, straw, barnyard, barley ears, lemon zest, oak, beeswax, and varnish. Dense, tropical stewed fruits, raisins, and spices are also present.
Palate
Raw, powerful, gritty, and tannic, with notes of lime, kiwi, paraffin, lemon, oil, strong liquorice, lemon syrup, and herbs like thyme and rosemary. It is dry and waxy with oak, barley, and a hint of seared beef, offering a rich and full-bodied profile of dried fruits and spice.
Finish
Long and lingering, characterized by grassy notes, dryness, cork, oak, straw, mead, mixed spice, sultanas, and a smoky-dry quality.
