Description

The Mortlach Rare Old is an entry-level single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region, launched in 2014 as part of a new premium range by owner Diageo. It is a non-age statement expression, matured in a combination of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, including first-fill and refill American Bourbon, heavily charred hogsheads, and sherry seasoned European oak casks, specifically dry Oloroso sherry butts. Bottled at 43.4% ABV, it showcases Mortlach's complex and bold character, known for its unique 2.81 distillation process. This release was designed to appeal to new audiences and highlight the breadth of Mortlach's flavor.

Nose
Thin and somewhat insubstantial, with hints of caramel, vanilla, sweet orange or mandarin, faint citrus, dried fruits, toasted oak, green apple, pear, fennel seed, flaky pastry, grilled almond/amaretto, and pale honey.
Palate
Syrupy and creamy body, fruity and superbly balanced. Notes of sweet malt, sherried fruit, spice, leather, subtle herbal tones, fruit cake/Eccles cakes, toasty oak, earthy cinnamon, fennel spice, orange or Pim's orange cookies, raisins, milk chocolate, fudge, nutty dimensions like cashews or Brazil nuts, and lemon oil.
Finish
Short to medium-long, with malty, faint metallic, earthy, fennel notes, stewed orchard fruit, cacao, sherried sweetness, oak spice, caramel, and a hint of peanut butter or mint/menthol.
