Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey 1991 / Soffiantino Import This brand of rye whiskey is very old, established, as the label suggests, over 150 years ago. At the close of Prohibition the brand's owners, the Mellon family, sold Old Overholt to National Distillers who continued to produce it for the next half century despite declining popularity in rye whiskey in US after the second world war. The oak sounds restrained on the nose and light and dry on the palate, while apples, herbs and rye spice do more of the talking. That balance appeals to me; the peppery oak on the finish gives the wood a little more presence without taking over.

There’s some richness in the cocoa, molasses and roasted nuts, but the dry rye bread, herbs and pepper keep it from reading as especially soft or sweet. That balance sounds appealing, though the description leans more savoury and dry than plush.

Soft apple and vanilla alongside dusty grain, herbs and pepper gives this rye a clear character. The dry, herbal edge sounds appealing, while fruit and chocolate bring some sweetness without making it read as a simple sweet pour.
