Description

Penderyn Icons of Wales No.8/50 - Hiraeth is a limited edition Welsh single malt whisky, the eighth release in the prestigious Icons of Wales collection. Bottled in 2021 at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, it is matured in ex-bourbon casks. This expression commemorates 'Hiraeth', a profound Welsh concept of longing for homeland. It is crafted by Penderyn Distillery using their unique Faraday still technology, and for this release, predominantly features spirit made from their traditional copper pot still. The whisky offers a balanced and flavoursome profile, reflecting Welsh cultural heritage and Penderyn's commitment to quality.

Nose
Rich honeyed fruits with vanilla sweetness, complemented by fresh orchard notes, subtle oak spice, and a hint of coastal breeze. Elegant and floral with light oak notes, vanilla, raisins, toffee apples, citrus peel and a hint of lime. Strong pear notes, along with a little bit of tropical fruit. Floral heather notes, baking scents of cinnamon and brown sugar, and a soft spirit note.
Palate
Velvety texture revealing layers of caramel, toffee apple, and warm spices balanced with malted barley, dried fruits, and delicate hints of toasted oak. A delicate smooth single malt with honeyed fruits, vanilla, cinnamon spice and a hint of nutmeg. Warming, with a medium-thick mouthfeel. Sugary sweet flavours of barley sugars, icing sugar, butterscotch, and clotted cream. Oak is stronger now, bringing cinnamon, wood spice, and white pepper; sweetness balances that out, specifically with notes of vanilla bean and pears. Oily texture.
Finish
Long, warming finish with gentle waves of sweet spices, vanilla, and a subtle touch of dark chocolate and dried fruit. Soft honey and vanilla notes fade to a malty finish. Still warming, and now a bit more drying. Oak spice gently tingles whilst the icing sugar and vanilla notes linger.
