Description

A contender for shortest-lived Speyside distillery, opened by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1975 and operational only until 1993. The distillery was intended to increase provision for the company's blends but its acquisition by Guinness in 1985 eventually saw it deemed surplus to requirements. This 1989 vintage offers drinkers a rare chance to try this whisky, at a superb age, as Pittyvaich is in an almost unique position in that its first official bottling only arrived after the distillery was closed.

Nose
Initially, it's slightly savory, with salted caramel, walnuts, and spicy raisins. Super malty, with fresh barley, baked apple notes, Custard Cream biscuits, subtle pepper, magnolia flowers, chewy red fruits. Ginger cake and green banana. Herbal, waxy, with a hint of earth; 'post-rain earth' (petrichor), hay, chalk/mineral notes.
Palate
Oily, with pineapple, apple crumble, malt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Really lively with zesty orange juice and hot cinnamon. Cooked apple, almond, coconut and menthol whispers. Medium-bodied but silky smooth, dominated by citrus, vanilla, malt, and vanilla sweetness. Herbal tobacco leaves, mint, green herbs, a hint of menthol/mint candy, plus minerality and spices (ginger, pepper, licorice). Mid-palate reveals orange oil, dried lemon peel, orange cream, almond syrup, apple shortbread, raisins, with a touch of saltiness.
Finish
Toffee, milk chocolate, and licorice in the peppery finish. Quite gentle, all about apple strudels, with a distant wisp of smoke. Very long, with notes of mint, herbs, roasted cocoa husks, and roasted barley tea.
