Port Askaig is a brand of Islay single malt whiskies, named after the historic port village on the island's northeast coast, which serves as a gateway to Islay. Launched in 2009 by Elixir Distillers, an independent bottler, the brand selects and bottles single malts sourced from established Islay distilleries, with the exact origins typically undisclosed. Nose
Honeyed and autumnal, with bonfires, dried leaves, and crisp, stony smoke. Hints of flowers like raspberry leaf and honeysuckle, along with a thick, spicy middle reminiscent of sponge cake batter and marshmallows. Roasted vanilla pods and charred hay are caressed by a sea breeze, mingling with dark, bold aromas of BBQ oranges, oregano, and coal smoke.
Palate
A lovely silky mouthfeel with a syrupy sweet start, quickly overtaken by flinty smoke and charcoal dust. Zesty lemons and Sherbet Fountains are found in luxurious textures with a hint of violet. Distinct notes of sea salt and lemongrass balance dark notes of grilled fish, brown sugar, and light tobacco smoke, intensifying with honeydew melon wrapped in Parma ham.
Finish
Medium to long, with hints of charred oak, tar, and salt, and finally some cold-smoked salmon. Melon and rock salt linger with a sooty smoke that carries a hint of sweetness for a long time, along with sweet melon and molasses.
