Description

An Islay distillery that developed a cult status following its closure by Distillery Company in 1983. Originally only providing fillings for blends, its single malt had become hugely sought-after by the turn of the 21st century. This 15th Release, part of the Diageo Special Releases, was distilled in 1983, the last year of the distillery's production, and bottled 32 years later in 2015. It is a limited edition of 2,964 bottles, matured in refill European oak butts. The distillery was re-opened by Diageo in March 2024 after a £185 million restoration project.

Nose
Immediate, intense, and complex, with maritime influences, rich aged notes, wet stones, and thick, tarry smoke. Coastal notes like sea spray, seaweed, and bonfire ash are present, alongside salted caramel, vanilla, lemon zest, and a slightly grassy, vegetal note. Some sources also mention aged black tea, sun-dried mango, burnt toffee, and incense.
Palate
Wonderful at natural strength, offering a balance of subtle peat smoke, deep dried fruits, and a smooth, oily texture. Flavors include wood ash, burnt jam tarts, treacle toffee, caramelized orange, and a spicy-herbal complex with cloves. Other notes include fresh, fruity, waxy lemon juice, orange, pepper, and wet pebbles. Some detect BBQ ribs, smoked meat, iodine, and licorice, with a viscous, oily mouthfeel.
Finish
Long, satisfying, and complex, with a lasting impression of its intricate profile. It is smoky, slightly drying, with lemon zest, dark chocolate, spices, and an old fireplace or burnt toast character. Herbal notes and wood smoke are prominent, sometimes with minty notes and barley sugar.
