Description

An Islay distillery that developed a cult status following its closure by Distillery Company in 1983. Originally only providing fillings for blends, its single had become hugely sought-after by the turn of the 21st century, so much so in fact that it was re-opened again by Diageo in 2024.

Nose
Light yet complex, with peat-reek, damp bark, charred wax, flowers, tropical fruits, chamois leather, and sherbet lemon. Seashells, wax, sweet apples, foam strawberries, incense, charcoal-grilled pears, marzipan, and earth notes also appear. Water brings back zestiness with lemon and coal dust.
Palate
Fabulously smooth, oily-textured, sweet, and fruity. Soft smoke, dry peat, coal, and leather to start, followed by lemony citrus, savoury earthiness, fragrant damp grass, ripe fruit (spiced peaches), and spicy smoked meats. Sugary notes and stewed apples with sweet custard are also present.
Finish
Smooth, warming, and spicy, with aromatic smoke. Digestive biscuits, crisp green grapes, and lingering notes of earth, damp leaf, and charred oak. Sweet apple appears and slowly fades to leave cocoa and a touch of minerality. Water enhances a fine smoky-waxy after-taste.
