Description

An Islay distillery that developed a cult status following its closure by Distillery Company in 1983. Originally only providing fillings for blends, its single had become hugely sought-after by the turn of the 21st century, so much so in fact that it was re-opened again by Diageo in 2024. One of Scotland's most prolific whisky companies, founded as an independent bottler by Andrew Symington in 198 ... Port Ellen is a closed distillery that reopened in 2024.

Nose
Quite lively, medium peat, with smoked meat. It feels feinty and spirity, with a bit of rubber and corn flakes cereals. Citrus notes of lemon and light grapefruit appear, along with hints of soapy notes and green apple. It is sweet and fruity, with fresh orchard fruits, assorted dried berries, a mild vanilla, a slight paint thinner note becoming medicinal, and a light peatiness with a touch of salt and sulfur.
Palate
Thicker mouthfeel than expected, with a surprisingly sweet arrival followed by soft peat and spices. Gentle heat, smoked chocolate, touches of citrus, a pinch of pepper and ginger, and a stick of liquorice. Vanilla and a hint of coconut are present, along with a complex mix of medicinal peat, minerals, and rubber. Notes of white wine and pilsner emerge, merging with vanilla, and orange peel fruitiness.
Finish
Gently smoky, very slightly spicy and bitter, with a bit of soapiness and something metallic. A mild peppermint cloud spreads across the palate, with white wine, beer, vanilla, and orange peel notes. The fruitiness resides on the edges, and peat notes recede, allowing oakiness to come through, along with a paint thinner note, assorted nuts, and a hint of orange peel in the late finish.
