Description

An Islay distillery that developed a cult status following its closure by Distillery Company in 1983. Originally only providing fillings for blends, its single had become hugely sought-after by the turn of the 21st century, so much so in fact that it was re-opened again by Diageo in 2024. This particular expression is a 27-year-old single malt from Port Ellen, distilled in 1983 and bottled in 2010 by independent bottler Douglas McGibbon as part of their Provenance series. It is presented at 46% ABV and is unchillfiltered with natural color.

Nose
Classic south shore Islay with sooty, smoky, medicinal, and briny notes, alongside sweetness like powdered sugar, cool stony and mossy mountain stream, berry notes (blueberry pancakes), fresh mint, and maple syrup.
Palate
Remarkable, very smoky with forest floor, moss, cool stone, decaying wood, gentle metallic brininess, engine oil, soot, charred wood, rich, savory juiciness (ripe peach), and amazing sweetness. Initially dry fore-taste runs to pepperiness, softened by cask characteristics.
Finish
Long, graphite, woodsmoke, gentle, mellow, balanced. Archetypal old leather from Port Ellen, tinged late by seaweed and iodine.
