Port Ellen 39 Years Old Untold Stories 1978 is one of the oldest Port Ellens ever bottled. This rare official bottling, dubbed The Spirit Safe, was released in 2019 by Diageo. Nose
Vibrant and expressive with initial aromas of golden syrup, gingerbread, toffee and candied limes. Further aromas of ripe tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, lychee) and earthy, woody spices (sandalwood, dry Autumn leaf litter, cigar wrapper leaf, cinnamon, clove).
Palate
Vibrant with expressive notes of juicy and over ripe tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, lychee, peach, apricot) mingling with sweet notes of toffee, manuka honey, golden syrup and a hint of milk chocolate. Savoury notes evolve to become more prominent than on the nose, with subtle peat and cigar smokes mixing with soft baking spices (cinnamon, all-spice, clove), warming gingerbread and hints of menthol, charcoal and sea salt.
Finish
Long and becomes distinctly ashy and dry with time. Tropical and sweeter notes fade to leave bonfire embers, charcoal and warming spices to the fore. Underneath are more subtle late notes of cocoa powder and malted cereals.
