Description

A Highland malt whisky from the Royal Brackla distillery, distilled in 1978 and bottled at 20 years old in 1998 as part of Diageo's Rare Malts Selection series. This series, launched in 1995, featured cask strength bottlings from various distilleries, often lesser-known ones, and was succeeded by the Special Releases series in 2003. This particular release was the first and only Royal Brackla in the Rare Malts Selection. It is presented at a robust 59.8% ABV.

Nose
Sweet and fruity with vanilla, leather, cereals, toffee, and salt. Notes of limes, soft lemon, mango, spiced apple cider, donuts, and orange. Also, a hefty oak and an "old" smell.
Palate
Powerful, salty, and fruity, with cereals, malt, mocha, liquorice, sweet fruit, and honey. Hints of dull cardboard, wood, brown cane sugar, espresso, caramel, brioche, pastry cream, spice, deep oak, tea with orange and apples, and cinnamon.
Finish
Long, spicy, and dark. Pretty oaky with spiced black tea (apple cinnamon blend), caramel, brioche, and a tannic but not bitter quality. Orange notes reappear, and it's very woody with great length.
