Description

A Highland malt distillery founded in 1845 by John Begg. It neighbours the Balmoral Estate and a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848 saw it bestowed with a Royal Warrant. It is today part of the Diageo portfolio and its single malt has been marketed since the 1970s. This is a limited release of individually numbered bottles, drawn from selected casks held in reserve, to commemorate the day Queen Victoria first visited the Lochnagar distillery in September 1848 and issued a Royal Warrant. The Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve was developed in 1988.

Nose
Deep and complex, bosky and mossy, with hedgerow flora and fruits (brambles, damson jam), sawn wood and minty-fresh pine resin, turned earth, deep toffee notes (treacle toffee?), and artist's turpentine. With water, varnish, coffee grounds, warm polythene, baked apple tart (with a scorched crust), and a hint of soft rubber and dry sherry.
Palate
Smooth mouthfeel, fresh wood notes, a hint of sweetness, drying quickly, treacley notes of toffee and coffee, baked apples, drying sherry, and a touch of cedar with warming spice.
Finish
Sharp, well balanced, silky with chocolate, candied nuts, raisins, and a lovely hint of barbecue smoke, orange, and cereal.
