This is the 13th edition of the Small Batch series from independent bottler Signatory Vintage, featuring a Secret Speyside single malt. Distilled in 2013 and aged for 11 years, it was bottled in 2024 at 48.2% ABV. Matured in first-fill Bolgheri Hogsheads, this unpeated and non-chill-filtered whisky was designed exclusively for the German market. The distillery of origin is undisclosed, though it is believed to be Tamnavulin.

Nose: Red, ripe apples, spicy aromas of cardamom and anise, nutty hints, and spicy oak. Also, summer compote of fresh berries, raspberries, cherries with whipped cream, hazelnut nougat pralines, coffee with milk, and malt candies.
Palate: Apples, freshly baked bread, apple cake with cinnamon and nuts with vanilla sauce. Warm raspberries and caramelized pears, sour cherries on melting dark chocolate, creamy. Caramel and malt, with a slightly musty and dry wine cask influence.
Finish: Long and sweet, with apples remaining present, turning into apple compote with soft spices. Long and round with powerful red fruit notes and delicate spices. Long and spicy.

Rich, complex and smooth, with a long finish, sounds well composed. I’m less sure what to make of the Bolgheri hogshead connection: the character described doesn’t say much about oak, so I wouldn’t read a specific oak influence into it.
