Description

The A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 16 Year Old Straight Bourbon is a distinguished and highly sought-after spirit, revered for its exceptional quality and historical significance. Distilled in 1974 at the now-defunct Michter's Pot Still Distillery in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, this bourbon was aged for 16 years. The last remaining barrels were moved to Kentucky for final aging and bottling, with this particular release bottled in 2003 at Buffalo Trace. Crafted in limited quantities, it is considered one of the most iconic and collectible bourbons ever released, known for its rich and complex flavor profile. This whiskey was notably awarded America's first five-star rating.

This 16-year bourbon has a compelling balance of familiar sweetness and seasoned oak: vanilla, maple and cherry meet toasted wood, then the finish turns drier with smoke and baking spices. That shift gives the sweeter notes some welcome definition. I’m drawn to the contrast more than sheer richness, and the long, evolving finish sounds especially appealing. It reads as a thoughtful, oak-led style rather than a simple rush of caramel.

The menthol note is an interesting counterpoint to the caramel and vanilla, while orange zest keeps the palate from sounding entirely oak-led. There’s plenty of detail here, though the finish is described as dry and oaky.

The distinctive pot still character gives the sweetness real grain interest.

The new American oak cask detail is a clear point of interest, and the notes pair toasted oak with a notably sweet range of vanilla, caramel, and maple. On the palate, cherry and orange zest bring a fruitier edge, while the finish shifts toward dry oak, smoke, and baking spices. That contrast gives the description a satisfying sense of progression without making the cask label do more explanatory work than the tasting notes support.
