Description

Produced at Knockdhu distillery in Aberdeenshire, anCnoc Peatheart is a peated single malt with intense smoke followed by orchard and citrus fruit notes. It is the smokiest-ever whisky from anCnoc and a welcome addition to their core range of 'Peaty' series. Peatheart is named after the peat bogs surrounding the distillery, described as the heart of Scotland's peatlands. Peatiness is controlled by the amount of peat burnt and the humidity of the barley, producing phenols. This expression uses barley malted to 40 PPM. It is matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46% ABV, non chill-filtered and naturally coloured.

Nose
An initial smoky burst surrenders to a surge of fruitiness. Ripe pears and the citrus notes of apples and limes with just a touch of tobacco in the background. The nose is balanced yet an undeniable smoky sweetness prevails. Understated peat smoke and barbecue balanced by ripe pineapples, pears and a dark, rich tone of baked toffee apples. Subtle vanilla and sparks of fresh lemon rind lend lightness and elegance to the composition. Shortbread, oakcakes, pipe tobacco leading towards earthy peat smoke. Lighter notes of citrus peels and vanilla ice cream.
Palate
Smoke laced with leather and sweet stewed apples. Chocolate is there too, perfectly complemented by sweet vanilla and zesty lemon. Structured and full with rich smoke in balance with juicy gummy bears and the light fizzy sweetness of spun sugar. Undertones of a hay barn and fudge give it a delicious weight. Chocolate malt, a touch of BBQ meat, cinder toffee and cardamom seed.
Finish
The finish has a lingering warmth with a floral smokiness. Long and growing finish distinctly spicy & sweet with a warming smoky finale. Surprisingly refreshing on the finish - smoke still persists, but notes of green apple and orange blossom develop alongside it.
