Description

The Balvenie 17 Year Old Sherry Oak is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region, bottled in 2007. This expression spent all 17 years of its maturation exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a rich and intense whisky characterized by mixed spice and sweet sherry fruitiness. It was a "First Edition Release" and the first time a 100% sherried Balvenie was bottled by the distillery.

Nose
Rich sherry, dried fruits, layers of oak, hints of spices and toffee. Starts dry, with coffee, bitter cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, hints of star anise, old leather, wax polish, old furniture. Honeyed passage, raisins, dates, prunes, subtle floral notes of roses and dandelion, raspberry and blackcurrant.
Palate
Gentle mouthfeel, balanced. Mixed spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves) combined with sweet, fruity, sherried flavours. Confections, muffin, brittle, golden syrup, flapjacks with dried fruit, almonds, cashews, buckwheat honey. Coffeeish and chocolaty notes, prunes, Corinth raisins, pleasant tannicity.
Finish
Rewardingly long and rich with a touch of dryness. Bitter, pungent, and pretty long. Lingering embrace of sherry sweetness and a gentle caress of oak. Honey and oak are the last to fade. Cooked blackcurrants and prunes.
