Description

Glenrothes 14 Years Old Darkness is an intensely sherried Speyside single malt from Glenrothes, independently bottled as part of the Darkness range. The whisky was specially finished for over three months in a fresh first-fill Oloroso sherry octave. These small casks create an increased interaction between whisky and wood, resulting in an unparalleled richness and depth of flavour.

A sweet, welcoming array of baked goods, think Tarte Tatin, fruit crumble, madeleines and sugar-dusted pastries. Freshly baked pastries, cooked apples, toasted hazelnuts, and plump, honeyed raisins.

Buttery layers of flaky pastry and shortbread, with poached apples, jammy fruits, and a dusting of sweet spice. Those pastry notes carry through, with layers of buttery shortbread, flaky apple tart, and blanched almonds.

The pastry notes linger, with soft fruits, butter biscuits and mellow oak. Sweet, biscuity barley, toasted nuts, and Madeira cake.

The apple and pastry notes give this a clear, warmly sweet character, with toasted nuts adding a welcome contrast. It sounds like a pleasing direction for a Speyside single malt, and the notes make its sherry octave cask character easy to picture.

A cozy pastry-and-apple character.

I tend to look for smoke, so the listed unpeated style is less tailored to that preference. The pastry, apple and toasted-nut notes still give this a warm, appealing direction.

The pastry and apple thread gives this Speyside malt a warm, dessert-leaning character, with toasted hazelnuts adding a welcome counterpoint. I’m most interested in the sweet, biscuity barley on the finish: it brings the malt into clearer focus after the buttery shortbread and fruit. The Oloroso Sherry Octave Cask is named, but the documented flavours matter more here than assumptions about what that cask must contribute. This sounds appealingly rounded, though the pastry sweetness seems to lead the conversation.
