Description

Highland Park Einar is a single malt whisky that pays tribute to the Viking history of the Orkney Islands. Named after the legendary Viking Einar, this whisky embodies strength, determination, and character. It is part of Highland Park's 'Warrior Series', a collection of non-age statement whiskies created for the European travel retail market. It is matured in American and European oak casks, offering notes of spicy oak, delicate smoked peat, and subtle sweetness of dried fruit.

Vanilla and citrus keep this clear and approachable, with light smoke and spice adding balance. The lingering sweet-smoke finish runs longer than I usually prefer, but the flavours fit together well.

American and European oak is a fun cask pairing to see named, and I like the balance in the notes: sweet vanilla and citrus meet light smoke and spice, then the finish holds onto sweet smoke. The cask detail catches my interest, but I wouldn’t pin any one flavour on a particular oak here. Overall, this reads as a gently smoky Highland Park with enough sweetness to keep things easygoing.

Einar looks like a good fit for someone curious about smoke but not looking for it to dominate. The notes keep it light, with vanilla and citrus providing a sweet, bright counterpoint to the smoke and spice. I like that the finish is described as lingering sweet smoke: it gives the smoky character room to stay present without suggesting a heavier, ash-led style. A balanced, approachable direction on paper.

Citrus gives this a clear, accessible fruit note, while sweet vanilla and light smoke keep it from feeling one-dimensional. The spice adds a gentle counterpoint rather than taking over. I like that the smoke is described as light through the nose and palate, then lingers as a sweeter note on the finish. That balance makes this an appealing, quietly distinctive direction for a lightly peated single malt.
