Description

The Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Special Release Barrel Proof Rye is a limited edition release from 2020, bottled at barrel proof (uncut and unfiltered) from a single barrel. It celebrates the distillery's first-ever barrel proof rye, made with a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley, and undergoes the charcoal mellowing process. The barrels were aged in the highest levels of the rickhouse.

The rye spice and pepper have a useful counterweight in molasses and dark fruit, with oak keeping the sweetness in check. There’s plenty of sweet character here, which may crowd out the finer grain detail I tend to look for, but the spice gives it some needed definition.

New American Oak is the stated cask, and the rye’s notes pair toasted oak and caramel with a more pointed run of pepper, mint and baking spice. That contrast is what makes the character interesting to me: sweetness is present, but it doesn’t simply soften the spice. The notes range widely, from fruit and molasses to pine and smoke, so I’d be cautious about reducing the character to a single cask effect. At 66.6% ABV, this is a high-strength release, though that fact alone doesn’t tell us how it drinks. Overall, it reads as a bold, busy rye with a useful balance of sweet and savoury cues.

The fresh mint/spearmint and candied orange on the nose give this rye a brighter side, though they share space with molasses and oak. On the palate, butterscotch and toasted oak take up more room, with spearmint and orange peel providing the contrast I find most appealing. That balance makes it more interesting to me than sweetness and spice alone would, even if the richer notes remain prominent. The finish brings back mint and orange peel alongside lingering rye spice, then adds tannic oak. I like that the fresher notes carry through all three stages, but the heavier sweetness and oak make this a qualified match for my taste rather than an easy favourite. It sounds full of character, with enough going on that I would give the brighter details my attention.
