Description

The mountain town of Karuizawa is situated on a high plain at the base of active volcano, Mount Asama, in the heart of Japan's mainland. In 1956, the wine and spirits giant, Daikoku Budoshu, expanded their already established empire there by building a distillery with the onus of producing a single malt to be utilised in the company's blends. They christened it 'Ocean'. 1958 saw a freer importatio ... [cite: Scotch Whisky Auctions]. This 1990 vintage Single Cask Whisky from the now-closed Karuizawa distillery was matured in a first fill sherry butt #679 and bottled at 56.1% ABV in 2012. It is part of the 'Geisha Label' series and was exclusively bottled by The Whisky Exchange, with only 433 bottles released.

Nose
Wood polish, mint, pine needles, and currants alongside a surprising meaty note. Luscious rich sweet intensely dried fruit nose. Aromatic with citrus jellied fruits and a sweet citrus note. Rich wood infused bittersweet arrival, raw cherry, young cherry, complex spirit, oranges, orange oil, orange peel, orange juice, toasted oak, vanilla, vanilla syrup, cherry stones, Oloroso, raisin, currant, nice rich fruity cedar note, brown sugar, rich brown sugar.
Palate
The sherry influence is clear, full of garden herbs, toasted oak, and raisins. Thick and rich with honey, wood, and extracted sherry. Very light salt. Wood influence is fine, but there's a strong dose of bitterness in the middle. It's not a sweet sherry, but dry and darker. Date-pineapple-papaya juice, but very trace.
