Description

The Rare Malts Selection was a series of Diageo cask-strength releases, launched in 1995, designed to showcase some of the finest and most exclusive whiskies from its extensive collection, often from lesser-known or closed distilleries like Port Ellen. This Port Ellen 1978 22 Year Old was distilled in 1978 and bottled in October 2000 at a natural cask strength of 60.5% ABV. It is a limited edition release and is highly sought after due to the closure of the Port Ellen Distillery in 1983.

Nose
Aromas of peat smoke, brine, tar, lemon, mineral, apple, vanilla, honey, iodine, citrus, and a maritime character. Hints of rock salt, dry seaweed, and buttery fudge.
Palate
Rich and full-bodied with smoky flavors, dried fruits, slight sweetness, and a warming sensation. Notes of oak, spice, charred oak, dark chocolate, espresso, and a salty character. Powerful, sweet and salty up front, with big smoke and tar returning mid-palate.
Finish
Long and lingering with pleasant smokiness, saltiness, and a gentle sweetness. Notes of ash, tobacco, black licorice, leather, peppercorn, and a spicy edge.
