Description

Hart Brothers is a family business specialising in the bottling of fine rare Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. With their roots in the town of Paisley, outside Glasgow, the company can trace its roots back to the 19th century, but brothers Alistair and Donald Hart have also been in the Whisky trade for over 30 years and have used their expert knowledge to acquire some of the finest Malt Whiskies available. This is a 1977 vintage Port Ellen from independent bottler Hart Brothers, released in the mid-1990s at 19 years of age. The distillery sadly closed in 1983 and bottles are becoming increasingly hard to find.

The notes point to a whisky that leans on richness without losing balance, which gives it a composed appeal. The aroma is described as satisfying, while the palate is explicitly called extremely rich and very balanced. A lingering finish adds a steady close. That combination sounds appealing to someone who values fullness with restraint, though the available descriptions leave the exact flavour character open.

The lingering finish is the clearest point of appeal here: it gives the whisky a sense of persistence without needing extra claims about what remains. The palate is described as extremely rich yet very balanced, a useful contrast that keeps the character from reading as one-dimensional. The aroma is called satisfying, though the description stays broad. Overall, this sounds like a composed, rich style, with the finish carrying much of its appeal.

The appeal here is the relationship between richness and balance. An extremely rich palate could easily dominate the conversation, but the documented balance suggests something more measured. The lingering finish also gives that richness a little room to stay. The nose is described as satisfying, without a particular aroma to latch onto, so the palate does most of the talking. I’d be careful about crediting the cask for any of this: no cask details are given, and the wood can’t make its case by implication. Although this is a peated Islay single malt, there’s no specific peat flavour described. For my taste, the supported combination of richness and balance is enough to make it appealing.
