Description

Shizuoka United S First Edition is a Japanese single malt whisky from the Shizuoka distillery, established in 2016 by Gaiaflow Co founder, Taiko Nakamura. This release is a blend of distillates from the distillery's two distinct pot stills, 'K' (salvaged from the legendary Karuizawa distillery) and 'W' (a wood-fired still). It was bottled in 2022 at 50.5% ABV, non-chill filtered, and with no added color. The whisky was aged primarily in first-fill bourbon barrels, ex-bourbon quarter casks, and wine barrels. It is a limited edition, with an outturn of 5,000 bottles.

The creamy mouthfeel gives its fruit and spice a gentle balance.

There’s gentle wood smoke on the nose and peat on the palate, so smoke is present, though it doesn’t seem to lead the character. Honey, peach, and citrus give it a softer counterpoint.

The fruit is the easy way into this one: green apple and pear on the nose lead toward apricot, mango and stewed apple. On the palate, ripe peach and honey meet gentle citrus acidity, while peat and a little oak spice add a drier counterpoint. That mix keeps the fruit from feeling one-note, and the familiar fruit comparisons make the character easy to picture. The medium-length finish brings honey and lemon zest back into view. A lively, layered direction that suits my fruit-leaning preferences.

Green apple, pear and citrus lead, with a pinch of salt and gentle wood smoke giving it the coastal edge I tend to look for. Honey, peach and a creamy texture make the overall character softer and sweeter than sharply maritime.
