Description

Mothballed by previous owners Whyte & Mackay, Bruichladdich distillery was revived in the year 2000 by independent bottler Murray McDavid. For a long time the distillery was the black sheep of Islay, on account of producing unpeated whisky in order to meet its owner's blending requirements. Contrary to general expectations though, this also made it a hit with the locals who were presumably sick of ...

Nose
Opens beautifully on a combination of plump ripe grapes, sweet oak and hot-washed malt with an overture of rowan, birch and heather in bloom. Also notes of bacon, prunes, yeasty malted barley, ripe plum, wet moss, burnt chocolate, brown butter, earthy barnyard funk, wet tobacco, silty and sulphuric notes, dark pure chocolate, sweet caramel, dried fruits, malted barley and oak.
Palate
Well-balanced fruitiness with oak, a squeeze of honey & lemon, and a slight nuttiness. Broad taste spectrum ranging from fruity to floral to wine-like citrus, kiln dried barley, and oaky overtures. Complex with rich grapes mulled with cloves, butterscotch, dark cherry, brownie batter, fruit sweetness from wine influence, buttercream frosting, sweet red apple, toast, chocolates, sugared fruits, and fudge.
Finish
Harmonious and long-lingering, like a good friend whose company is enjoyed. Juicy grapes and cloves, sweet malt, dark chocolate with sea salt, dried tobacco leaf, caramel on the edge of being burnt, apple skin, long warmth with baking spices. Medium long with a shadow of tannins lingering over honeyed oats and nuts.
