Description

Islay's remote north east coast might seem a strange place to find a substantial Victorian distillery, but it was chosen in 1881 by William Robertson in partnership with Greenlees Bros. as the perfect spot for his island vision. Constructing it meant not only building the distillery but houses as well, putting in a road, and adding on a pier so that casks and barley could come in, and whisky go out. This rich mahogany malt is classic Bunnahabhain, intensely warming with dried fruit, sherry, toffee and spices, leading to a delicious honeyed nuttiness and a hint of sea salt. It is non-chill filtered and has natural colour.

Nose
Fragrant with notes of dried fruit, rich honeyed nuts, toffee and slight hints of spice. Salted caramel leading to sticky toffee pudding sprinkled with nutmeg. With time a leathery quality emerges.
Palate
Mellow sherried nuts, dried fruit and rich oak, with toffee and a slight tang of salt from its 18 years of maturation at the coast. Dense, rich sherried notes perked up with a coastal saltiness. On a second wave roast chestnuts emerge and gentle wood spice.
Finish
A dry fruit finish with a hint of spice and salt. Woodspice becomes mixed spice. The finish is warming and lengthy; salt and sherry towards the very end.
