Description

A historic Highland malt distillery and one of the oldest still operating in Scotland. Established in the heart of Old Meldrum back in 1797, it is today part of the Beam Suntory portfolio and produces a non-peated spirit which is entirely reserved for its single malt brand. This old Glen Garioch was independently bottled by the Whisky Sponge. Distilled in 1988, it matured in a single refill hogshead for 33 years before being bottled at natural cask strength in 2022. A limited number of only 145 bottles were produced.

Nose
Lovely waxy notes, like sunflower oil, turpentine and soft medicinal ointments. Sweet herbs, chamomile and heather honey. Mashed bananas, eucalyptus, teak oil, damp moss and lime. Softness, complexity, gentleness, with ripe fruits and many flowers. Mirabelles, dandelions, quinces, Barbour grease, ski wax, patchouli, vetiver, benzoin, green oranges, overripe apples, honeydew, pine resin, sauna oil.
Palate
Mineral oils, herbal tea, paraffin and resinous notes. Stewed fruits, bananas, guava, honeyed notes. Herbal, bittersweet note, tobacco and leather. Mentholy oak, green tea, honey, cough syrup, liquorice tea, lemon and cinnamon tea, lapsang souchong, leaves, pine needles, eucalyptus.
Finish
Not the longest, but beautiful, with waxy sweetness and a sharper herbal side. Medium, with almonds, menthol, citron and eucalyptus syrup.
