Description

This Ichiro's Malt & Grain Blended Japanese Whisky Limited Edition 2022 is an exceptional release from the Chichibu distillery, produced in only 500 bottles. It has been recognized as a 'Category Winner' at the World Whiskies Awards for 'Best Japanese Blended Limited Release'. This rare blend is composed of whiskies aged for a minimum of 10 years, with some components reaching 20-40 years, and includes malt from Chichibu and Hanyu distilleries, and grain whisky from the Kawasaki distillery. It is bottled at 48% ABV, without additives or coloring, and is non-chill filtered. The whisky is matured in a combination of Bourbon and Sherry casks.

I like the contrast between the oaky dried fruit and honeyed sweetness up front, then the brighter fruit and peppery baking spices on the palate. It sounds layered without leaning entirely into sweetness or wood. The finish is described as mild yet lingering, which suits the more restrained side of this character. A balanced, inviting set of notes, though the range of flavours may be busier than someone looking for a very simple dram would want.

The fresh apple and lemon notes give this a welcome lift against the oak, vanilla and baking spice. It sounds fruit-forward without losing its woody side, though the sawdust note makes the character feel less cleanly bright than my usual preference. A balanced, interesting direction.
