Description

Midleton Very Rare is a special series of bottlings from the Irish distillery. The series was launched in 1984 and each bottle is a blend of the finest distillates which have been handpicked by the distillery manager. This particular release, the 37th edition, was bottled in 2020 and is the final vintage created by Master Distiller Brian Nation. It is a meticulous marriage of single pot still and single grain whiskeys aged between 13 and 35 years, matured in lightly charred ex-bourbon American oak barrels.

Nose
Initial top notes of cane sugar and vanilla intertwined with pepper and nutmeg spices, complimented by sweet orchard fruits and white chocolate fudge all layered over polished antique wood notes. Bold pot still spiciness, with a pinch of red chilli flake fruitiness developing into sultana, apricot, and green apple.
Palate
Initial burst of tangy fruit sweetness of orange peel and sweet pear creating a succulent texture while the pot still spices build overtime adding a mild prickle of chilli oil. Orange oil, mature oak, more crumbly fudge, toasty cinnamon and five-spice, with a constant background of charred oak.
Finish
Satisfyingly long finish with the fruits slowly fading, allowing the oak and spices to linger until the very end. The big, vibrant spices linger, plus hints of juicy nectarine and candied peels.
