Description

A historic Highland malt distillery and one of the oldest still operating in Scotland. Established in the heart of Old Meldrum back in 1797, it is today part of the Beam Suntory portfolio and produces a non-peated spirit which is entirely reserved for its single malt brand. This is a stunning 1978 vintage release from Glen Garioch, a limited release of 1,320 cask strength bottles.

Nose
Fruity with hints of pepper and ginger. Honey and vanilla with a whiff of smoke, leaning toward a vanilla creme filled donut. Sweet lemon cake and star fruit. Dryness. Initially spicy fruits and ash, rich wood, toffee, brown glue, light herbal honey, dried green herbs, shoe polish, new leather, dusty bookshelf notes.
Palate
Peat, red grapefruit juice with perfect bitterness and sweetness. Spice with white pepper and cinnamon. Woodspice, leather, glace cherries, candied citrus peel, wet oak, hints of wood smoke, green chilli peppers, icing sugar.
Finish
Long. Peat and pepper play on the tongue with a sweet under-note, overall dry mouth. Back of the palate dry and chalky, gullet peppery. Woodspice dominates, mainly cinnamon, more green pepper notes. More pronounced smoke. Candied citrus, orange marmalade. Slight stinging bitterness.
