Description

Meetings between the Islay distilleries and the legendary Italian bottler, Silvano Samaroli, have produced an absolutely stellar selection of whisky over the years. No star in this constellation of greats shines quite as brightly, however, as the Laphroaig 1967 sherry wood. Revered by whisky connoisseurs the world over, this is often regarded as one of the best whiskies ever committed to bottle. T ...

Samaroli "Silver Caps"
Historical context
The 1960s was a golden era in production for many Islay distilleries, and Laphroaig was still using 100% of its own malt from in-house malting floors during this vintage.
Special release
Bottled for the Italian market; a collaboration between Laphroaig and renowned independent bottler Silvano Samaroli.
Allocation
Italian market
Nose
Pungent and smoky with coal smoke, coal tar soap, and iodine. Big, sherried, and woody with tannins, earthy phenolic notes, old waxes, sea salt, dried herbs, preserved lemon, and peach skins.
Palate
Sweet to start, then salty and dry with tarry smoke and medicinal, seaweed-like flavors. Full-bodied with a beautiful salinity, earthy ripe notes, cooked apples, dry cracked wood, camphor, old salve, and citric rawness. Juicy fruits like strawberries, raspberries, mango, peaches, apricots, sweet grapefruit, and oranges, akin to a rich orange liqueur.
Finish
Long, salty, bitter in a herby way, with persistent wood tannins, damp salt-encrusted driftwood, and compost notes.
